Introduction
The development of geoinformation technologies in Russia and in the world goes together with a rise of interest to open source geospatial software. Among the numerous existing open source solutions the gvSIG is one of the key tools. The gvSIG is the universal GIS tool with open source. The modular application architecture, advanced analytical tools, support of open geospatial standards make the gvSIG of the modern and adaptable platform for development of geoinformation solutions of different level – from desktop GIS applications to enterprise and regional GIS.
he gvSIG project was born in 2004 within a project that consisted in a full migration of the information technology systems of the Regional Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport of Valencia (Spain) to free software. Since 2009 the sustainability of gvSIG Project is guaranteed by international gvSIG Association which unites the developers of the gvSIG platform, research and governmental organizations, educational centers, and the companies using the gvSIG and other open geospatial software as the base of their business solutions.
The Russian gvSIG Community was created with the objects of spreading of the using of the gvSIG in Russia and providing the further technological development based on open source geospatial technologies.
Main Directions of Activity (Mission)
The uniting of Russian gvSIG users and developers of the gvSIG, promoting the gvSIG and open geospatial software, creation of the base to technological independent of the Russia in the field of the geospatial technologies, forming the conditions to development of the small and middle business in the high technology using the business models based on the open source software.
Aims
- The spreading of using of the gvSIG and open source geospatial software in Russia.
- The writing and translation of Russian version of the documentation, manuals, and tutorials.
- The training of the Russian users and developers of the gvSIG with the help of Russian Community.
- The certification of the Russian users and developers of the gvSIG with the help of gvSIG Association.
- The informing about use cases of the gvSIG and open source geospatial software in Russia.
- The learning and adaptation of international experience of using the gvSIG and open source geospatial software.
- The realization of the Russian projects on the development and using of the gvSIG under methodological support of the gvSIG Association.
- The organizing of the Russian and international workshops and conferences.
- The collaboration with governments of different levels, private companies, educational and voluntary organizations in order to promote of open source software and geospatial technologies as a part of the modernization of the Russian economics.
